Weekend Notes

A family joke goes that my favorite food is shrimp dipped in chocolate. Not quite, but I do like both, separately.

*Turns out Fabian Seafood sells shrimp out of a truck on Milwaukee's Green Bay Avenue (Glendale) at the Mobile Gas Station. I've heard of this company selling never-frozen shrimp (so they claim) at local gas stations, but I had always assumed this was a Milwaukee urban legend. Guess not. Check their Web site to get on a mailing list.

*Chocolate with pop rocks is my favorite junk food of the moment. At first bite this stuff tastes like a Crunch bar, and then pop rocks start going off in your mouth. Weird and addictive. I haven't seen this chocolate in Milwaukee, but I did find Kras, a Serbian brand of pop-rock chocolate, at the City Fresh Market in Chicago.

I had heard about the mysterious seafood truck, but wasn't sure how to find out when it would be in town. Thanks for posting the link!

Fascinating. So, should I be scared when I hear "shrimp sold out of a truck"? :)

Have you tried Fabian yet?

I just discovered your blog--I've got tvorog-to-be on the stove right now. I used to be able to get tvorog at Whole Foods here, but they stopped carrying it. So, I'm grateful to you for your recipe! (Yes, there are Russian grocery shops yere, but their tvorog tends to be, um, not very fresh.)

PostCollegeCook--You're welcome. I didn't know when it would be in town myself until someone passed on a flyer.

Lo--Live dangerously! :) Actually, I did try it and it was good. Heard they sell prawns, too.

Kristen-Thanks for stopping by...I know Sendik's sells farmer's cheese. Possibly some of the higher-end groceries, too. Never tried it at the Russian stores, but, as always, you have to check expiration dates.

@Postcollegecook - I signed up for their e-mail list – so I hope the next time they will be in town I hope I can receive advance knowledge. It’s kind of curious, but they had 3 different kinds of shrimp at different price points. Anyway, it was all packed in ice so I think that a pretty safe bet to eat and cook. I also could mention that it was delicious.
